Thoughts on our ‘Whole Food Nutrition’ Ethos and Your Body

A lot of silly stories spring from the intersection of human biology, food science and marketing. But here’s one you can take to the bank. The mechanics of en masse food production – from R&D to manufacturing to the underlying business model – evolved muchfaster than our own digestive systems.

That means much of the highly processed and “Franken food" we eat every day gets introduced to our body in forms that our digestive systems don’t have the tools to break down appropriately – it’s like asking a plumber to do electrical work – and so it passes through without being absorbed or is stored in fat cells. The outcome: gas, cramping, constipation. We not only don’t realize whatever nutritional gain was intended by that meal, we also expose ourselves to weight gain, ill health effects, and even developing cancer.

That is the discouraging truth about the modern nutritional paradigm, and the problem extends into many food products that are ostensibly healthy. It’s just so easy to market something for people who are looking for protein, looking for fiber, looking in some cases for carbohydrates. But so many of those products contain low-quality protein, low-quality fiber, low-quality carbs.Jeca Energy Bars was built specifically with this challenge in mind. The ethos that emerged – let’s call it Whole Food Nutrition – took into account not just the volume and balance of macronutrients but also how they are presented to our digestive system. Foods in their most natural forms create the most digestible food molecules. It’s as simple as that. And this fact is at the root of every decision Jeca makes about its own products.

Whole Food Nutrition and Jeca Energy Bars

So…yeah. Here we are. The part where we point out that what doeswork. Eat food that has not been heavily processed. Your body starts working on that food from the moment it interacts with your saliva, and by the time it hits your intestines, the enzymes are making more connections than a LinkedIn influencer.

That’s the science that drives our Whole Food Nutrition ethos at Jeca Energy Bars. We twine that with a belief in macronutrient balance – each of our bars has two parts carbohydrates, one part protein and one-part healthy fat – which reflects the sequencing of energy burn in the body. When you get the right stuff in the right format, magic happens.

You might be asking yourself why these traits are so rare in energy bars. Energy bars are there to support healthy behavior, aren’t they?  So why would most of them be manufactured in a way that is demonstrably unhealthy? The answer is that it’s a difficult problem to solve the challenge of making a healthy energy bar that (a) satisfies consumer preferences for texture and taste, (b) is affordable, and (c) is actually healthy.

It’s taken us years of research, development and testing to find the right ingredients, the right equipment and replicable processes that will allow us to expand without having to sacrifice our whole ingredients, process or quality. In other words, we can be proud of offering high quality food that is whole, nutritious and delicious.

For us it’s not just about building a company. We are driven very deeply by our mission, and we are committed to demonstrate that it is possible to offer snacks that nourish our bodies, satisfy our cravings and gives us the energy in a way that our bodies love.

Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom. It’s a long article and it took a while to write. But for some reason, we’re not tired just yet ;)
